The last time these teams squared off was at the very start of the 2021 NFL season, where the 49ers beat the Lions 41-33 at Ford Field. The 49ers would go on to reach the Conference Championships that season, while the Lions finished with an abysmal 3-13-1 record.
San Francisco is fresh off a 24-21 win over the Green Bay Packers in the Divisional round, where Purdy threw for 252 yards and a touchdown, while Christian McCaffrey had 17 carries and rushed to the end zone twice. San Francisco staged a 10-point comeback for the win in the fourth quarter, holding Green Bay scoreless. McCaffrey’s 6-yard run with 1:05 on the clock sealed the win for San Francisco.
The Lions eliminated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a neck-and-neck game that was dead even through three quarters, before Detroit opened up with a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter off Jimmy Gibbs 31-yard run and Jared Goff’s 9-yard pass to Amon-Ra St. Brown. Weaknesses in Detroits second line were still evident, however, and its a trend the 49ers will likely try to exploit.
