Syracuse, N.Y. — Quarterback Kyle McCord announced that he had verbally committed to Syracuse on Sunday, landing the Orange their most pedigreed quarterback in decades during Fran Brown’s first few weeks on the job.
News that McCord planned to commit to Syracuse was first shared with the Syracuse Sports insider text group late Saturday night.
McCord, a former five-star recruit in the Class of 2021, owns the best high school pedigree of any Syracuse player since five-star quarterback Cecil Howard came to campus out of high school in 2001. Howard never played a game for the Orange.
McCord has already proven he can perform at the Division I level, having thrown for 3,170 yards, 24 touchdowns and 6 interceptions last season for Ohio State. The Buckeyes lost just one game with McCord under center.
McCord will likely be the Orange’s most well-established most quarterback since Donovan McNabb led the Orange.
The only Syracuse quarterback to ever throw for more than 3,000 yards passing in a single season was Ryan Nassib threw for 3,749 yards as a senior in 2012. Entering that year, however, Nassib hadn’t thrown for more than 2,685 yards.
Because the commitment came from a sitting starter at a national powerhouse — Ohio State coach Ryan Day was non-committal about whether McCord would be the starter next season — McCord’s decision put a rare level of attention on the SU football program.
National media members called it a huge pick up for the Orange, Syracuse fans ran wild with enthusiasm and Ohio State fans were salty.
McCord, who is from Philadelphia, told ESPN’s Pete Thamel that he’s looking forward to being around SU’s New Jersey contingent of players who he knows from childhood. That group includes Alijah Clark Jr. and Denis Jaquez Jr.
Said McCord: “Just being around a bunch of guys I played football with growing up,” McCord said. “Being around coaches I’ve known forever. It felt like everything is happening at the right time.”
