The Buffalo Bills season finale against the Miami Dolphins in Week 18 is for the 2023 AFC East title after the Bills (10-6) beat the New England Patriots on Sunday and the Dolphins (11-5) lost to the Baltimore Ravens.
But when is the game?
The Bills just announced that their game against the Dolphins will be on Sunday Night Football next week on Jan. 7. That means the entire slate of games will be done and the Bills will know what the game will mean before kickoff.
The Bills’ playoff math is simple. They win and they’re in the playoffs as the AFC East champs and they’ll secure the No. 2 overall seed. If they lose to the Dolphins, they’ll need some help just to earn a Wild Card spot. If the Pittsburgh Steeler and Jacksonville Jaguars win in Week 18, the Bills are eliminated if they lose to Miami – barring any ties in any of those games and/or the Indianapolis Colts vs. Houston Texans game.
So Buffalo could be in a win-or-go-home situation next Sunday night.
The NFL waits until almost all the games are finished for Week 17 before they determine times for the final Week 18. That’s been the operating procedure since 2006 to maximize viewership for the games that mean the most.
The Dolphins suffered a brutal loss on the road to the Ravens on Sunday, 56-19. They were without offensive stars Jaylen Waddle and Raheem Mostert and their situation worsened in the game. Edge rusher Bradley Chubb suffered what’s expected to be a torn ACL and cornerback Xavien Howard was carted off the field with a foot injury and didn’t return.
The Bills opened as a two-point road favorite, according to Betonline.ag. Early money has pushed the line up to -3 on FanDuel.
Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa left Sunday’s game with a shoulder injury but told reporters that it was just soreness. Bills quarterback Josh Allen left Sunday’s win over the Patriots with a stinger but said he was “good to go” when he spoke with reporters after the game.
