Orchard Park, N.Y. — Unbridled jubilation quickly turned to panic on Thursday night for Buffalo Bills rookie tight end Dalton Kincaid sitting in a sea of Bills Mafia moments after his first career touchdown.
Kincaid was overjoyed when he crossed the goal line for the first time in his NFL career – so much so that he decided to leap into the stands.
There was just one problem.
“I was pretty claustrophobic,” he said. “So that moment, I was like, all right, I’m ready to go back down. I think that’s everyone’s dream, scoring and jumping up there, celebrating, and then just celebrating with teammates. Super special moment.”
The Bills had a few special moments in the first half of their 24-18 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The offense finally looked like itself and finished the first 30 minutes with 17 points, scoring on three of their four possessions.
While Kincaid was dealing with the cramped conditions in the middle of a few dozen Bills fans, quarterback Josh Allen came flying into the pile. Allen said all rookies are known as “stupid rookies” because they have certain tendencies that veteran players avoid.
“You never know what they’re gonna do on their first touchdown,” Allen said. “So I stole (the ball) from him and made sure I got it to our equipment manager (Austin Skobel) and ‘Scoby’s’ gonna put it in a nice spot and laminate it and put something pretty on it for his first touchdown.”
Kincaid was targeted seven times in the game and caught five passes for 65 yards and the touchdown. It was his first game since starting tight end Dawson Knox went on injured reserve following wrist surgery earlier this week.
With Knox set to miss at least the next three games, Kincaid’s role in the offense is going to grow. He played an estimated 83% of snaps against the Buccaneers as the Bills leaned into 11 personnel (one tight end and one running back) for most of the game.
