With little faith it’ll work, Liverpool school board votes to keep ‘Warriors’ nickname

Liverpool, N.Y. — The Liverpool school board on Monday night voted to continue using the “Warriors” nickname but some board members acknowledged it was probably an empty gesture.

The school board approved a resolution to keep the nickname because they say it now refers to a Roman-like warrior. The mascot was originally an Indian.

New York education officials have ordered school boards to discard their nicknames and mascots that refer to Native Americans. That’s still in effect if the nickname had a historical connection to Native American themes, the state said. That’s the case in Liverpool.
