Syracuse, N.Y. – A boy hit by a bullet in the leg in Syracuse this weekend had just got a haircut and was coming out of a barber shop Saturday, according to the district attorney.
The boy was walking out of Bimboโs Barber Shop at 745 S. Geddes St. around 5:30 p.m. Saturday when multiple shots were fired from across the street, said Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick. A vehicle in front of the shop was the target, he said.
About 2 dozen shots appeared to have been fired; the DA said about 24 shell casings were recovered at the scene. Police earlier said at least 13 rounds were fired.
The boy suffered a wound to his calf after he was caught in the gunfire, Fitzpatrick said. He was taken to Upstate University Hospital and is expected to survive, he said.
The boy shot was 10 years old, the DA said. Police had initially reported the boy was 8 years old.
Another boy who was 8 years old suffered a cut to his head, police said. He was cut by a piece of glass, they said. It was reported earlier by police that the child was grazed by a shot or by shrapnel.
Fitzpatrick said it is unclear at this time if video evidence or witnesses said what happened at the scene.
