Urbana has initiated a major infrastructure development along state Route 54A (West Lake Road) to improve resilience against severe weather disruptions. The $12.2 million venture, announced by Governor Hochul’s office, will see the implementation of a 5-mile-long closed drainage system, curbing, and road repavement. The comprehensive drainage system will mitigate stormwater runoff and manage groundwater, thereby improving travel conditions.
The project, funded by a FEMA pre-disaster mitigation grant and state funds, is designed to enhance slope stability and prevent water runoff damage along Route 54A, which has previously experienced slope failures and hazards due to severe weather. The new infrastructure aims to prevent future damage and road closures. “This needed investment will better protect Keuka Lake, our homeowners, and our many visitors,” said Steuben County Manager Jack Wheeler.
Construction work, which commenced on July 5, will begin at the southern end of Route 54A and progressively move northward. Although full closures of certain road sections may be necessary, these will occur outside of the busiest summer months with advance notices given. Temporary traffic lights will manage single-lane conditions in localized work zones until early September. The project is slated for completion by summer 2025.
