232 new state troopers graduate from academy

The New York State Police welcomed 232 new members to its ranks following the graduation of the 213th session of the Basic School of the New York State Police Academy. The ceremony, held at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center in Albany, was presided over by Acting Superintendent Dominick L. Chiumento. This addition boosts the State Policeโ€™s sworn members to 4,781.

Acting Superintendent Chiumento praised the graduates for their hard work and dedication, highlighting their commitment to serving with honor and integrity. The rigorous training, encompassing both academic and physical aspects, has prepared these new Troopers to uphold the esteemed reputation of the New York State Police.

The ceremony also included the presentation of several prestigious awards. Trooper Mark J. Novello received the Academic Achievement Award for his exceptional academic performance, while Trooper David A. Heath was honored with the Firearms Proficiency Award for his outstanding skills in firearms training. The Investigator Joseph T. Aversa Physical Fitness Award was bestowed upon Trooper Paul R. Tripi, and Trooper Kevin J. Knightes was recognized with the Student Representative Award by his peers. These awards reflect the high standards and diverse skills of the new graduates. The new Troopers will report for field duty on December 27, 2023, and undergo a 10-week field training program under the guidance of experienced officers.
