$25M in grant funding available for volunteer fire departments across New York

Governor Kathy Hochul has declared the availability of $25 million in capital funding to support New York’s volunteer fire departments. This grant, part of the 2023-24 State Budget, is aimed at enhancing the facilities and equipment of volunteer fire services across the state.

An additional $10 million has been allocated for training course costs, furthering Governor Hochul’s commitment to bolstering the state’s volunteer fire service. The application process, overseen by the State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services, is open until April 30, 2024.

This funding initiative supports various objectives, including ensuring fire stations meet safety and building codes, enhancing firefighter safety through proper equipment like personal protective equipment (PPE), and promoting the consolidation of fire services for better regional response.

The grant is divided into two parts: $20 million for construction, renovation, or facility purchases, and $5 million for essential fire service equipment. State officials have emphasized the critical role of volunteer fire departments in emergency response and community safety, acknowledging the increasing challenges they face.
