Auburn considers leasing cell tower space for affordable broadband

Auburn City Council is set to decide next week on a proposal to lease cell tower space to Community Broadband Networks, aiming to bring affordable internet services to Auburn residents.

In a presentation to the council on Thursday, the companyโ€™s representative, Thomas Magg, highlighted their dedication to providing internet, phone, and broadcast television services to those with limited broadband accessibility.

The Citizen reports the companyโ€™s plan includes a monthly $30 discount for qualifying individuals, such as Medicaid beneficiaries and those earning less than double the federal poverty level. Additionally, select residents in federal housing would receive free internet, and diverse payment packages would be on offer.

Councilโ€™s decision on the collaboration with Community Broadband Networks will be made during the Nov. 2 meeting. Should council give the green light, the companyโ€™s equipment is expected to be in place by Novemberโ€™s end.
