The first of nine Section V boys basketball championship games at the Blue Cross Arena began early Friday night with the No. 3 seed Marcus Whitman Wildcats falling to the No. 1 seed Avon Braves, 69-47, in the Class B2 finals.
It was a close first half as Avon led 17-16 after eight minutes and 37-32 at halftime, but the Braves pulled away in the second half, outscoring Marcus Whitman 32-15 in the third and fourth quarters to secure their tenth sectional title in program history.
Three players scored in double figures for Avon, and leading the way was junior Trevor Stroud, who poured in a game-high 29 points. Michael Rowland also had himself a game, netting 22 points, while Josh Harter added 14.
A pair of juniors led Marcus Whitman as Myles Prendergast notched 16 points, and Brayden Amadeo scored 11 in the first 16 minutes. Brody Royston contributed nine points, and Tariku Blueye chipped in eight.
The Wildcats finished the season with a 16-7 record, while the Braves improved to 22-1.
Avon will face the Class B1 champion (Hornell or Mynderse) in the New York State Class B Far West Regional qualifier on Wednesday, March 6.
