The Clyde-Savannah School District is set to launch a pioneering program providing free day care for its staff members’ children, aged 6 weeks to 4 years. This initiative, starting at the end of January, is believed to be the first of its kind in New York State where childcare is included as a benefit for district employees. The district plans to allocate about $150,000 from the 2023-24 budget for this program.
The day care, located in a classroom in the elementary school, will be headed by Kim Larsen, a certified day-care provider and long-time district employee. She will be assisted by Stephanie Maddox and Candance Chance, both experienced in day-care centers, and Sarah Large, who has worked in Clyde-Savannah’s after-school programs. The service is set to begin on January 28, pending official approval, with nine children already enrolled.
Superintendent Mike Hayden highlighted the challenge of finding affordable and reliable childcare in rural areas, which often impacts staffing decisions.
