The no. 6 ranked Cornell women’s ice hockey team defeated the no. 14-ranked Yale Bulldogs at Ingalls Rink on Saturday evening to claim the Ivy League title. The Big Red finished the regular season with a 22-6-1 record, while the Bulldog finished at 15-13-1.
Mckenna Van Gelder and Karel Prefontaine registered Big Red goals in the contest. Izzy Daniel (two), Grace Dwyer, and Lily Delianedis dealt assists in the game.
Yale got the better of Cornell in the opening period, finding a way to send 20 shots at Big Red netminder Annelies Bergmann, but the standout first-year goalie allowed none to get past her. The Big Red and the Bulldogs would finish the period in a 0-0 tie.
Cornell would begin the second on a power-play due to an interference penalty that was called against Yale at the end of the first frame. Van Gelder would find the back of the net after poking the puck between the legs of Dukaric. Moments later, Cornell opened a two on one break which was quarterbacked by Daniel who would find Prefontaine across eyes for the score.
Ella Hartje of the Bulldogs would respond with a goal on a rebound to cut the Yale deficit to one going into the third.
Cornell opened up the third with heavy offensive-pressure looking to add insurance to its 2-1 lead. Just under two minutes in, Hartje and Avi Adam would find themselves with matching minors after a scuffle in front of the Big Red net, opening up the ice for a four on four. The scoreboard would remain unscathed throughout the four on four action.
Dukaric cleared the net with about two minutes left to play. Heads up goal-tending by Bergmann in the final stretch and during the six-on-five helped Cornell staeve off an equalizer and earn its 16th Ivy League title in program history.
Bergmann would finish the game with 35 saves in the win, as her record would improve to 16-5-1 between the pipes this season.
