The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office has launched an investigation into the discovery of credit card “skimming” devices at two more Walmart stores in the Finger Lakes region.
Between July 2 and July 5, these illicit devices were found at stores located in Geneva and Canandaigua. According to information provided by store employees to the Sheriff’s Office, three individuals collaborated to install the skimming devices at a single point of sale card reader in each store.
The detection of these devices took place on July 5. At present, it remains uncertain whether any personal data was successfully collected by the skimmers.
Geneva and Canandaigua Wal-Mart locations are now added to a list of stores where skimming devices have been found including Waterloo and the Southern Tier and Auburn where the device was in-place for four days.
In light of these incidents, the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office is urging individuals who utilized credit or debit cards at these specific Walmart stores to thoroughly review their financial statements for any unauthorized transactions. Should any unauthorized purchases be identified, affected individuals are advised to promptly notify their financial institution and report the matter to law enforcement.
Police have received multiple reports regarding a total of twelve skimming devices being placed at various Walmart locations in Central NY and the Finger Lakes region.
The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating this matter in collaboration with local authorities and relevant stakeholders.
