Dog control officer accused of stealing dog, saying it died, and selling it

Investigators from the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office made an arrest on October 26 in a bizarre case involving an allegedly deceased dog.

Scott R. Casterline, 51, from Lindley is accused of using his position as a public servant to unlawfully take someone else’s dog, selling it, and then falsely reporting the animal’s death.

The investigation led authorities to Ohio, where they found and successfully retrieved the reported missing dog, returning it to its rightful owner.

Casterline now faces charges of official misconduct, misapplication of property, and offering a false written statement.

He has been released with an order to appear in Lindley Town Court on a future date.

In wrapping up the case, Sheriff Jim Allard extended his appreciation to the City of Corning Police Department for their crucial support throughout the investigation and subsequent arrest.
