Penn Yan Police arrested 33-year-old Chad K. Jones of Dundee on several charges including criminal possession of a weapon, assault, menacing, and disorderly Conduct. The arrest followed an incident at a local establishment shortly after midnight on New Year’s Day, where Jones was involved in a physical altercation and brandished a gun.
Officers responded to the scene but did not initially find a firearm on Jones. However, they discovered brass knuckles and a cellphone nearby. Surveillance footage showed Jones attacking another patron, knocking them to the ground, and subsequently pulling a handgun from his waistband.
The police investigation revealed that Jones and the victim knew each other and that the attack was not random. Police were not called during the initial incident but were alerted about an hour later when Jones returned to the bar.
As a convicted felon, Jones is prohibited from possessing firearms. A thorough search led to the discovery of a loaded SCCY CPX-2 9mm semi-automatic handgun under a vehicle in the Microtel parking lot. A subsequent search warrant executed at Jones’ apartment yielded a magazine for the handgun, its box, additional ammunition, and cellular devices.
Jones was remanded to the Yates County Jail, with bail set at $10,000 cash, $20,000 bond, or $30,000 partially secured bond. The Penn Yan Police, in collaboration with the ATF, are investigating the origin of the gun, which they have traced to an individual outside of New York State. This ongoing investigation underscores the challenges law enforcement faces in tackling illegal firearm possession and use.
