Former Cayuga County Legislator Gerald Secaur passes away at 87

Gerard Francis “Jerry” Secaur, a former Cayuga County Legislator and long-time Auburn Correctional Facility Sergeant, passed away on December 22, at the age of 87. Born and raised in Auburn, New York, Secaur dedicated his life to public service and community involvement. He was a proud veteran of the United States Army and an esteemed graduate of Central High School and Cayuga County Community College.

Secaur’s commitment to his community extended beyond his professional career. After 31 years at the Auburn Correctional Facility, he continued to serve the public as a Cayuga County Legislator. His involvement with organizations such as the Knights of Columbus, Ancient Order of Hibernians, and the Highland Park Golf Club showcased his passion for community engagement.

Fondly remembered as the “World’s Tallest Leprechaun” during St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, Jerry’s spirit and dedication were evident in all aspects of his life. He is survived by his wife, Mary E. “Liz” Secaur, their three sons, eight grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. The family extends their gratitude to the staff at the Commons for their exceptional care. Calling hours are scheduled for December 27, with a Mass of Christian Burial on December 28 at Sacred Heart Church, followed by burial at St. Joseph’s Cemetery.

The family suggests donations to the St. Alphonsus Food Pantry or St. Jude’s Hospital in lieu of flowers.
