Former CNY fire treasurer stole $50K while at del Lago, Turning Stone casinos

The former treasurer of Morley Volunteer Fire Co., Cindi Perkins, 58, has been ordered to pay $50,000 in restitution and sentenced to five years of probation for embezzling public funds. This order was announced by New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli on January 4, 2024.

Perkins, who pleaded guilty to grand larceny in November 2023, misappropriated funds from the fire company during her tenure from 2016 to 2019. Investigators discovered that she made unauthorized cash withdrawals at ATMs in the Del Lago Resort & Casino and the Turning Stone Resort Casino. Furthermore, she wrote checks to herself from the fire companyโ€™s account and misappropriated cash, including funds from fundraisers.

The investigation revealed a correlation between the amounts Perkins deposited into her personal account and the funds received by the fire company. She used the stolen money for personal expenses, including groceries.

Her sentencing was carried out in St. Lawrence County Court by Judge Gregory P. Storie. Comptroller DiNapoli emphasized his commitment to combating public corruption and encouraged public participation in reporting fraud and abuse. New Yorkers can report fraud involving taxpayer money through various channels provided by the State Comptrollerโ€™s office.

Perkinsโ€™ case highlights the ongoing efforts of state officials to ensure accountability and integrity in the management of public funds. The restitution and probation sentence mark a significant outcome in the fight against corruption and misuse of community resources.
