Free tax filing: New York rolls out new option for filing 2024 tax return for free

New Yorkers gained access to a free online tax filing program, Direct File, introduced by the Internal Revenue Service on Tuesday, as part of a pilot in 12 states. Aimed at simplifying the tax return process, Direct File is expected to cater to approximately 19 million taxpayers nationwide, covering about one-third of all federal tax returns.

In a move to further ease the tax filing burden, New York State, in collaboration with Code for America, unveiled an online tool designed to streamline state tax returns. After utilizing Direct File for their federal returns, residents can effortlessly transfer their data to the stateโ€™s program, facilitating a swift filing process.

The Direct File service is available to New Yorkers who meet specific criteria, including residing in the state year-round without out-of-state income, and whose earnings come from wages, Social Security, unemployment benefits, or interest.
