Gas prices lower slightly for Valentine’s Day week in the Finger Lakes and Central New York

Valentine’s Day has come early for drivers in the Finger Lakes and Central New York, as AAA announces a drop in gas prices for the week. The national average price for a gallon of gas has fallen to $3.42, a 5-cent decrease from the previous week. In New York, the average price has dropped 4 cents to $3.52.

According to the Energy Information Administration, the decrease in gas prices is due to lower demand compared to a year ago.

GasBuddy’s head of petroleum analysis, Patrick De Haan, says that while diesel prices may continue to fall, gasoline prices in some areas are on the rise as the transition to summer gasoline approaches.

However, if the demand for gas and the cost of oil remain low, pump prices may continue to drop, says AAA. In Western New York, cities such as Batavia, Buffalo, Elmira, and Syracuse have seen a decrease in prices, with Batavia leading the way with a 4-cent decrease. Rome, Watertown, and Rochester have also seen decreases, with Rome experiencing the largest drop at 6 cents. Ithaca remains unchanged at $3.52.
