Geneva has launched a new initiative to combat opioid overdoses by providing free access to the opioid antidote naloxone, known as Narcan. In partnership with Trillium Health of Rochester, a vending machine dispensing Narcan kits was installed at the Exchange Street parking lot’s bus shelter, making the life-saving drug more accessible to the community.
This initiative comes in response to the alarming rate of opioid overdose deaths, with more than 100,000 fatalities annually in the U.S. While naloxone has been a critical tool in saving lives, its high cost of $50 to $60 per kit has been a significant barrier. The new vending machine in Geneva, operational since December 23, has already distributed over 100 naloxone kits.
Trillium Health remains open to expanding the program, offering services across the Finger Lakes region.
