Police are warning local residents about a scam where the perpetrators impersonate Geneva police officers.
On September 19 around 10 a.m. GPD was alerted to a phone scam circulating around the city. โIt has come to our attention that these fraudsters are impersonating Geneva Police Officers in an attempt to deceive unsuspecting individuals,โ the department said in a statement.
The scammers apparently claim that a family member of the recipient has been arrested for DWI and was involved in a personal injury accident. This type of fraud is common across the state and country, with countless examples being highlighted in other reporting.
The scammers then try to demand large sums of money as bail for the release of the detained family member.
โWe would like to take this opportunity to inform our community about this deceptive scheme,โ GPD officials added in the statement. โPlease be aware that the Geneva Police Department would never make a phone call to secure bail money. If you receive a call of this nature, we strongly advise against providing any money or personal information.โ
Instead, they ask that residents immediately hang up and call 911 if they receive this type of call.
