The Geneva Family YMCA is set to launch a significant $4.3 million renovation project of its William St. facility, with a groundbreaking ceremony scheduled for Thursday, May 25th.
The initiative, first planned in 2017 but delayed due to the Covid pandemic, is anticipated to take 15-18 months for completion under the supervision of Massa Construction Inc. Executive Director, Mary Bakogiannis, emphasizes the projectโs necessity, noting that it will enhance key programs including child care, after school, summer camp, and senior wellness.
The project, maintaining operations during the renovation, will add a two-story wellness center, a group exercise studio, a Chronic Disease Prevention and Recovery program center, and a revamped Childcare Center within an extra 10,000 sq. ft. of space.
Renovations also cover updates to locker rooms, gymnasium floor, lighting, ventilation, and the buildingโs HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems. Funding for the project includes a $2.5 million donation from the Brenda & Dave Rickey Foundation and a $750,000 grant from the NYS Finger Lake Regional Economic Development Council. A community fundraising campaign over the next two years aims to secure the remaining $1 million.
