The City of Geneva’s ambitious plan to transform the former Lehigh Valley rail line into a comprehensive rail trail received a substantial boost through a $180,000 state grant. This funding, provided by the state Department of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, is earmarked for constructing a bridge over Doran Avenue, marking a pivotal phase in the trail development. This initiative aims to eventually connect with the extensive Ontario Pathways trail network, enhancing recreational opportunities and connectivity in the area.
Liz Toner of the city’s Planning and Economic Development Office highlighted the bridge’s role in completing a crucial trail segment, extending from East North Street and Clark Street to North Exchange Street. She praised the efforts of local volunteer groups, including Friends of the Greenway and BluePrint Geneva, for their instrumental roles in advancing this project. This development is part of the city’s broader strategy to revitalize the north end and link Geneva to regional trail systems.
The rail trail project emerges from the city’s North End Brownfield Opportunity Open Space and Connectivity Strategy Planning study, targeting the enhancement of Ward 6’s connectivity to the lakefront while broadening recreational offerings. Jackie Augustine, director of Blueprint Geneva, emphasized the project’s significance in fulfilling long-standing community aspirations for more recreational spaces in the area. As the project progresses, further phases, including additional bridge constructions, are anticipated to complete the trail’s integration through the city, promising a steady advance towards realizing Geneva’s recreational and connectivity goals.
