Greenidge Generation Holdings Inc., a cryptocurrency datacenter and power generation company, has reached an agreement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to remove an old coal ash pond at its Dresden facility.
This pond, over 60 years old, was a leftover from the site’s previous coal-fired operations. Since acquiring the facility, Greenidge ended coal-fired operations, converting it to natural gas and investing heavily in its power generation and datacenter.
The company has committed to a five-year plan to excavate and clean up the coal ash pond, adhering to federal and state environmental standards.
Dale Irwin, President of Greenidge, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating that the successful operation of the company enabled the removal of this longstanding environmental issue.
Additionally, Greenidge has settled matters with the EPA regarding past reporting and monitoring of the pond, agreeing to pay a $105,000 fine without admitting fault. Since 2014, Greenidge has not used coal nor disposed of Coal Combustion Residuals at the site.
They have also completed infrastructure development to reroute wastewater and stormwater away from the pond, further aligning with environmental standards.
