Grenades, handgun recovered after standoff in Auburn

Some residents were evacuated- and one person is in custody after an hours long standoff in the city of Auburn.

The incident began when authorities received reports of a man, later identified as Thomas Harvey, allegedly under the influence of drugs and threatening self-harm with a grenade.

Upon arriving at the scene, a multi-unit residence on Orchard and Jefferson Streets around 3:15 am, the police discovered Harvey was possibly armed with a handgun and violating two protective orders.

Despite Harvey barricading himself inside the residence, police, including APDโ€™s Emergency Response Team, Onondaga County Sheriffโ€™s Officeโ€™s Bomb Squad, and Cayuga Countyโ€™s Tactical Response Unit, managed to arrest him after he tried to escape on foot following lengthy negotiations.

The subsequent search of Harveyโ€™s residence unearthed two inert grenades, an inoperable rifle, two bb guns, and a crossbow. Harvey was charged on multiple counts including an Aggravated Family Offense and Resisting Arrest, and was taken to Cayuga County Jail.

The District Attorneyโ€™s Office has recommended Harvey remain in custody due to his previous felony convictions and current charges.
