HEAP: New York extends heating assistance for low and middle income families

Governor Kathy Hochul has announced an extension for the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP), offering further aid to low- and middle-income New Yorkers struggling with their heating bills. With energy prices remaining high, the extension through April 12 and the introduction of a second emergency benefit aim to provide relief to those at risk of losing heating fuel or facing utility shutoffs. Eligible New Yorkers who have already utilized their regular and first emergency benefits this winter now have the opportunity to apply for additional support.

The HEAP program, federally funded and managed by the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance, assists eligible residents in heating and cooling their homes. With this extension, individuals may receive up to $976 based on various factors such as income, household size, heating method, and the presence of vulnerable members within the household. To date, over 1.4 million Regular HEAP benefits and 49,000 Emergency HEAP benefits have been distributed this heating season, providing significant financial aid.

Applications for HEAP can be submitted online, via mail, or in person at local departments of social services, with a deadline of April 12 for all benefit types. This program not only helps to alleviate the financial strain of energy costs for families but also supports the repair or replacement of essential heating equipment, ensuring New Yorkers can stay warm during the winter months. Acting Commissioner Barbara C. Guinn and officials like Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer and Representative Joseph Morelle commend the program’s impact and encourage eligible households to apply for these benefits.
