Herons tripped up by Brewers 75-52

The William Smith College basketball team completed its conference-opening road trip with a 75=52 loss to Vassar College this afternoon. The Herons fall to 0-7 overall and 0-2 in the Liberty League while the Brewers move to 7-1 overall with a 2-0 mark in conference play.

Senior Brooke Jarvis led William Smith with 15 points and seven rebounds while three Herons chipped in six each. First-year Miranda Martin chipped in six points and two rebounds, while sophomore Carly Scott added six points and one rebound, and first-year Amelia McCulley recorded six points and three rebounds.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• William Smith opened up strong against Vassar, opening the contest on a 10-6 run led by junior Molly Walsh and first-year Miranda Martin who both converted three-point plays.
• The Brewers closed out the first quarter on a 7-2 run in the final three minutes to take the lead heading into the second.
• Senior Kerstin Kelly and Martin hit back-to-back three pointers in the second to keep the Herons in the game before Vassar used strong shooting from the line to push their lead.
• The Brewers sunk six free throw shots late in the half to extend their lead to 14 at halftime.
• Vassar continued their momentum in the second half going on a 12-0 run to open the second half.
