High-speed chase in Onondaga County leads to arrest and recovery of stolen vehicles

A high-speed chase in the early hours of Saturday, November 18, in Onondaga County resulted in the arrest of one individual and the recovery of multiple stolen vehicles.

The incident began around 3:30 a.m. when Onondaga County Sheriff Deputies responded to a report of a stolen Kia Forte from Westbrook Hill Drive in the Town of Onondaga. Shortly thereafter, Onondaga Community College Police observed several vehicles speeding out of an OCC parking lot near West Seneca Turnpike.

The pursuit intensified when a sheriffโ€™s deputy identified three stolen vehicles, including the Westbrook Hill Drive Kia, and attempted to stop them. The drivers, however, ignored the deputyโ€™s signals and continued eastward on West Seneca Turnpike at high speeds, disregarding traffic signals and driving recklessly. To halt the vehicles, sheriffโ€™s deputies deployed spike strips, which successfully punctured the tires of the three cars. Two of the vehicles subsequently crashed, and their occupants fled the scene. Despite efforts by a New York State Trooper K9 unit, the fleeing suspects were not immediately apprehended.

The third stolen vehicle crashed on Monticello Dr. N and overturned in a yard. The occupant, 20-year-old Jaquize Bunch, was arrested and charged with multiple traffic violations, unlawful fleeing a police officer in the third degree, and criminal possession of stolen property in the fifth degree. Bunch was transported to Upstate Medical for evaluation and was released shortly afterward. Two civilian vehicles were also involved in the incident but their occupants were unharmed. The Onondaga County Sheriffโ€™s Office is actively continuing its investigation into the incident.
