In response to a federal investigation, New York Governor Kathy Hochul’s administration has implemented a series of reforms, concluding the sexual harassment scandal involving former Governor Andrew Cuomo. The Department of Justice and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York found that Cuomo created a “sexually hostile work environment” for at least 13 female state employees. The investigation detailed unwelcome sexual contact, comments, and other inappropriate behavior by Cuomo.
The federal probe also highlighted that Cuomo’s administration officials were aware of his conduct but failed to take proper action, choosing instead to shield him and retaliate against his accusers. Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke emphasized the severity of these actions due to the power imbalance and the victims’ limited recourse.
Governor Hochul’s office agreed to enact reforms to address past system failures and prevent future incidents of systemic sexual harassment and retaliation. The measures include expanding human resources, establishing a sexual harassment hotline, and revising policies for reporting and handling complaints. These actions aim to safeguard against harassment and ensure a safer work environment in the state’s executive chamber.
