Hochul could soon sign bill pushing changeout of lead pipes in old homes

In an effort to address the health concerns associated with lead pipes, Governor Kathy Hochul is soon to consider a measure aimed at identifying and replacing hundreds of thousands of lead service lines delivering water to residences.

The proposal requires public water systems to establish and regularly update a lead service lines inventory, including a summary for each location.

State health officials will also be mandated to publish the information via an interactive online map, enforcing guidelines from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the state Department of Health.

The proposed measure is particularly relevant for low-income and communities of color, where lead service lines are commonly found.

The legislation is part of Governor Hochulโ€™s broader anti-lead efforts, including increased funding for lead paint removal.
