Hochul signs abortion law expecting constitutionality to be questioned

In response to legal restrictions on abortion in other U.S. states, New York Governor Kathy Hochul signed a law on Friday shielding New York abortion providers who utilize telehealth services to prescribe abortion medication to out-of-state patients.

The governor clarified that New York would offer no assistance to states seeking to prosecute these providers. โ€œToday, we made a strong statement we said that doctors who choose to help these women in other states can prescribe and send them abortion medication pills,โ€ Hochul said, adding that she is prepared to defend the law against expected constitutional challenges.

This measure follows the U.S. Supreme Courtโ€™s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, with lawmakers and medical experts working since last March to fortify New Yorkโ€™s stand on abortion rights.
