Late last night around 11:40 p.m., a house located in the 100 block of Cleveland Ave on Ithaca’s South Side was engulfed in flames.
Ithaca Fire Department (IFD), which was first to arrive at the scene, reported heavy fire visibly blowing nearly into the street. Initial efforts involved stretching hose lines and dousing the outside of the house with water, followed by teams entering the structure to search for inhabitants and quell the flames.
No human casualties were reported, but a cat was discovered and rescued during the search operations. It suffered injuries and received immediate medical care and transport by the SPCA.
The fire was under control within about 30 minutes with assistance from Bangs Ambulance, Ithaca Police, NYSEG gas and electric, and the Red Cross.
The Newfield, Lansing, and Cayuga Heights Fire Departments also provided support. Due to the extensive damage, two individuals have been displaced.
The cause of the fire is currently unknown and under investigation by the New York State Office of Fire Protection and Control, in collaboration with IFD and Ithaca Police.
