Honda Motor Co.’s American division has issued a recall for more than 2.5 million vehicles across the U.S., citing a fuel pump defect that could lead to engine failure or stalling. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that the impeller in the fuel pumps of certain 2017-2020 Acura and Honda models was improperly molded, causing potential deformation and interference with the fuel pump body. This issue may result in an inoperative fuel pump, posing increased risks of crashes and injuries. However, Honda has confirmed no reports of crashes or injuries related to this issue so far.
In response, Honda has announced plans to replace the faulty fuel pumps free of charge, although the availability of replacement parts is currently limited. The company will notify vehicle owners in stages, with the first batch of notification letters scheduled to be sent in February. Dealers have already been informed of the recall. Vehicle owners are encouraged to check whether their car is included in the recall using the NHTSA’s website or Honda and Acura’s recall lookup tools.
The recall encompasses a wide range of models, including various versions of the Honda Accord, Civic, CR-V, and Acura MDX, among others. Additionally, the NHTSA and Honda have also announced a separate recall of over 106,000 2020-2022 CR-V hybrid vehicles due to a missing fuse in the power circuit of the exterior 12-Volt battery cables, which could lead to short circuits or overheating in the event of a crash. This series of recalls underscores Honda’s commitment to safety and its proactive steps to address potential hazards.
