Improving voter turnout? State takes aim at changing when certain positions are elected

A proposed bill in the state legislature is set to alter the voting years for certain local positions, shifting from odd to even-numbered years.

The measure, if passed, would affect the terms for town supervisors, county executives, and a few other local roles, potentially requiring these officials to serve shortened terms to synchronize with the new even-year cycle.

The proposed legislative change, however, wouldnโ€™t impact city elections or certain local posts.

The bill has already received approval from both the state assembly and the senate. It is now up for Gov. Kathy Hochulโ€™s approval. The sponsors of the bill, who are Democrats, argue that the proposed changes would enhance voter turnout.
