Lawmakers want increased security at religious schools as threats increase

In response to a recent surge in antisemitic and anti-Islamic threats and hate crimes, a bipartisan group of state lawmakers in Albany, New York, is pushing for a significant increase in grant funding dedicated to enhancing the security of non-public and religious schools.

The group, including prominent figures such as Senate Deputy Majority Leader Mike Gianaris, a Democrat, and Senate Minority Leader Robert Ortt, a Republican, is advocating for the doubling of the state’s usual allocation for safety measures in these schools, from $45 million to $90 million.

This increased funding is intended to facilitate the acquisition of essential safety equipment, including security guards and cameras, for these institutions. The move comes in light of recent incidents that have heightened concerns about the safety of religious communities and their educational establishments.

Lawmakers have addressed a letter to Governor Kathy Hochul, declaring their intention to advocate for this additional funding in the state budget. The legislative session in Albany, where this matter will be a point of focus, is set to commence on January 3.
