On February 2 a distressing incident unfolded in the town of Sennett, where a woman was attacked while walking her dog along Rockingham Road.
Sheriff Brian Schenck reported that the attack occurred around 8:50 a.m., prompting an immediate response from the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office and Auburn Police Department. The assailant, identified as John T. Netti, was apprehended at the Highland Golf Course following a brief search initiated after he fled the scene of the attack.
According to investigations, Netti emerged from a utility trailer parked by the roadside, aggressively approaching the victim and attempting to strangle her. The attack was halted when a vigilant neighbor intervened, shouting at Netti and contacting emergency services. This prompt action led to Netti releasing the victim and escaping into the nearby golf course, where law enforcement later captured him.
Netti, who has no known connection to the victim, has been charged with criminal obstruction of breathing, a Class A misdemeanor. He is scheduled to appear in Sennett Town Court at a future date.
In light of the incident, a comprehensive stay-away order of protection has been issued for the victim’s safety. Under New York State Bail Reform Laws, Netti was released without bail. The community remains alert as the legal process unfolds.
