The New York Mets (35-42) had a chance to win a series for the first time in nearly a month, but the bullpen collapsed late and they were edged by the Philadelphia Phillies (40-37), 7-6, on Sunday afternoon at Citizens Bank Park.
New York held a 6-3 going into the bottom of the eighth, but Josh Walker did not retire any of the three batters he faced and Jeff Brigham walked in a run and hit two batters, forcing in the game-tying and go-ahead runs. The Mets went down fairly easy in the ninth as Buck Showalter was tossed from the game for the first time this season.
Pete Alonso collected two hits and drove in three runs, including his 24th home run of the season. Francisco Lindor blasted his 15th long ball, while Brandon Nimmo and Starling Marte added RBI.
Carlos Carrasco allowed two runs over four innings of work as he continues to have trouble giving New York length.
The Mets will head home to begin a four-game series with the Milwaukee Brewers starting Monday at 7:10 p.m.
