The New York Mets (44-50) jumped out to a seven-run lead thanks in large part to a five-run first inning but barely held on for an 11-10 victory over the Chicago White Sox (40-56) in the series opener at Citi Field on Tuesday night.
New York led 11-4 after six, but Grant Hartwig and Trevor Gott combined to allow five runs in the seventh, and David Robertson gave up one in the ninth before getting Tim Anderson to fly out with two on to end the contest.
Francisco Alvarez recorded his third multi-homer game with a pair of two-run shots. Brett Baty also went deep, and Jeff McNeil had a couple of RBI singles. Tommy Pham and Francisco Lindor chipped in run-scoring doubles, while Pete Alonso added a sacrifice fly.
Carlos Carrasco failed to complete five innings yet again. The veteran right-hander allowed four runs on six hits over 4 2/3 innings.
The Mets will try to string together their third straight victory on Wednesday with Justin Verlander on the mound. The first pitch is slated for 7:10 p.m.
