Max Scherzer turned in his best start of the season, and the bats exploded as the New York Mets (34-38) cruised to an 11-1 victory over the Houston Astros (39-34) in the series opener at Minute Maid Park on Monday night.
Scherzer followed up his terrible outing against the Yankees with eight innings of one-run ball while striking out eight. The right-hander improved to 6-2 on the season.
New York collected 14 hits, with almost everyone contributing in some capacity. Six of the nine players in the starting lineup had two-hit nights.
Francisco Lindor led the way with two hits and five RBIs, including his 14th home run of the season. Daniel Vogelbach smacked his fourth homer and had a two-run single. Starling Marte, Tommy Pham, and Jeff McNeil added RBIs.
Mets reliever and 26th-ranked prospect Grant Hartwig, who was undrafted and out of baseball less than two years ago, recorded the final three outs of the contest.
Francisco Alvarez left the game after eight innings with a hand injury. He had preliminary X-rays that came back negative, per the team.
Justin Verlander will take the ball on Tuesday at 8:10 p.m. as the Mets look to take the first two games of this three-game series against the Astros.
