Mets edge Dodgers to win series after Max Scherzer’s ejection

The New York Mets (12-7) edged the Los Angeles Dodgers (9-10), 5-3, on Wednesday afternoon to win the series.

However, the game started with some chaos. Max Scherzer’s start was cut short after he was ejected for the fourth time in his career for what the umpires believed was an illegal substance on his glove. The right-hander was told to change his glove and wash his hands in the third inning but was thrown out before the fourth inning for not complying with what the umpires had told him. Scherzer had allowed just one hit through three shutout innings.

Brandon Nimmo crushed his first home run of the season in the fifth inning to give the Mets a 2-1 lead, and they never looked back. Mark Canha added a two-run double, and Tommy Pham contributed with a sacrifice fly.

Jimmy Yacabonis, Jeff Brigham, Drew Smith, David Peterson, and Adam Ottavino combined to pitch the final six innings. Yacabonis, Robertson, and Ottavino each surrendered a run.

The Mets will head to San Francisco to open a four-game series with the Giants on Thursday at 9:45 p.m.
