Mets edged by Brewers in series opener

The New York Mets began a week-long homestand on Monday night and it did not start on the right note as they dropped the series opener to the Milwaukee Brewers by a score of 2-1.

Justin Verlander fired five shutout innings but his outing was quickly spoiled after Drew Smith came on and served up a go-ahead home run in his first game back from suspension.

New Yorkโ€™s offense was held to three hits with the lone run coming from Francisco Lindor, who lifted a sacrifice fly in the fourth.

The Mets, who have lost 16 of their last 21, will try to get back in the win column Tuesday at 7:10 when they turn to left-hander David Peterson.
