Mets hold off Braves in series opener behind Brandon Nimmo’s huge night

The New York Mets picked up a series-opening 8-7 victory over the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park on Monday night to improve to 4-6 on the season.

Brandon Nimmo had a huge night at the plate, going 4-for-4 with two home runs and five runs batted in, including a game-tying three-run shot in the fifth inning and a game-tying solo blast in the seventh. Nimmo also added a run-scoring single.

DJ Stewart smacked a go-ahead two-run home run in the eighth, while Starling Marte added an RBI single that put New York on the board in the fourth.

Julio Teheran made his Mets debut and failed to make it through three innings. The right-hander surrendered four runs on six hits in 2.2 innings. Cole Sulser, Jake Diekman, and Jore López each allowed a run.

The Mets and Braves will continue their four-game series on Tuesday at 7:20 p.m. Adrian Houser is scheduled to start for New York, while Reynaldo Lopez will take the mound for Atlanta.
