Mets hold off Diamondbacks for third straight win

The New York Mets (39-46) held on for an 8-5 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks (50-36) in the series opener on Tuesday evening at Chase Field, extending their win streak to three straight.

After the Diamondbacks erased an early deficit and tied the game in the fifth, Francisco Alvarez smacked a go-ahead two-run homer in the seventh before the Mets tacked on two more runs, thanks to DJ Stewartโ€™s sacrifice fly and Francisco Lindorโ€™s double.

Starling Marte smashed a three-run home run earlier in the contest, while Brandon Nimmo also went deep.

Max Scherzer allowed four runs over six innings of work. Drew Smith gave up the lone run in relief before David Robertson closed it out in the ninth despite Arizona loading the bases.

Kodai Senga will take the ball on Wednesday as the Mets will try to take the first two games of this three-game series. The first pitch is slated for 9:40 p.m.
