Mets hold off Reds in series opener

Make it two straight wins for the New York Mets as they held off the Cincinnati Reds, 3-2, in the series opener at Great American Ball Park on Friday night.

New York (2-5) fell behind 1-0 in the first inning but tied the game in the fifth on Francisco Lindorโ€™s sacrifice fly and grabbed the lead in the seventh on Pete Alonsoโ€™s fielderโ€™s choice. Jeff McNeil added a huge insurance run in the eighth with his first home run of the season before Edwin Dรญaz picked up the save despite allowing an unearned run.

Brett Baty collected two hits and made a terrific diving catch in the fifth with two on and nobody out, eventually helping the Mets get out of the inning without giving up a run.

Jose Quintana gave up a first-inning home run to Spencer Steer but then tossed 4.2 shutout frames in his second start of the season. Drew Smith, Brooks Raley, and Adam Ottavino had scoreless appearances.

The Mets will try to notch the series win on Saturday at 4:10 p.m. Luis Severino will take the ball, looking to bounce back from his first outing.
