Mets lose two of three to Padres

The New York Mets (42-48) suffered a series loss despite taking the opener after falling 6-2 to the San Diego Padres (43-47) on Sunday evening at Petco Park.

New Yorkโ€™s offense was quiet again as they had just five hits and went 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position. Mark Canha drove in both runs with a double in the eighth inning to avoid the shutout.

Max Scherzer allowed a three-run homer and a two-run homer to Manny Machado over five innings. TJ McFarland surrendered a run in relief while Grant Hartwig and Dominic Leone had scoreless outings.

The Mets will get four days off for the All-Star break before they return to action on Friday at Citi Field for a three-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
