Mets sign relievers Jake Diekman, Shintaro Fujinami to 1-year contracts

The New York Mets added to their bullpen Friday, signing left-hander Jake Diekman and right-hander Shintaro Fujinami to one-year contracts.

Diekman’s deal includes a vesting option. The 37-year-old posted a 3.34 ERA across 56.2 innings with the Chicago White Sox and Tampa Bay Rays last season. During his 12-year career, which has also included stints with the Philadelphia Phillies, Texas Rangers, Oakland Athletics, Kansas City Royals, Arizona Diamondbacks, and Boston Red Sox, Diekman has a 3.82 ERA.

Fujinami, who owns a 7.18 ERA over 64 big-league games, signed for $3.35 million plus up to $850,000 in incentives. Despite the high ERA, the 29-year-old has great stuff and was one of the hardest-throwing pitchers in baseball last season, topping out at 102.6 mph. The Mets hope they can turn his career around.

Diekman and Fujinami will join a bullpen that already consists of Edwin Díaz, Adam Ottavino, Jorge López, Brooks Raley, and Drew Smith.
