The New York Mets (20-21) split a doubleheader with the Washington Nationals (17-23) on Sunday, losing the Matinee 3-2 before winning the nightcap 8-2.
GAME 1 RECAP:
In the first game, which was a continuation of Saturday’s suspended game, CJ Abrams crushed a go-ahead solo shot off Dominic Leone in the seventh inning, and that was the difference as the Mets’ ninth-inning rally fell short.
Brandon Nimmo and Jeff McNeil provided all the offense, each driving in runs with sacrifice flies. Michael Perez had a nice afternoon at the plate, going 4-for-4, while Brett Baty collected a pair of hits.
Stephen Nogosek took the mound and tossed three innings of one-run ball before Leone went two, and Dennis Santana threw one.
GAME 2 RECAP:
The Mets’ offense woke up in the second game, scoring all eight runs in the fifth inning and cruising to victory.
Mark Canha opened the big inning with a run-scoring double and capped it with an RBI single. Starling Marte plated two runs with a single, while Brandon Nimmo and Franciso Lindor added RBI singles. Brett Baty drew a bases-loaded walk, and another run scored on a throwing error.
Max Scherzer surrendered a run on two hits over five innings, improving to 3-2 on the season. The righty also walked two and struck out six.
Brooks Raley worked a scoreless inning in his first game off the injured list despite trouble with command.
UP NEXT:
The Mets will try to secure a series win on Monday with left-hander David Peterson on the bump. The first pitch is scheduled for 4:05 p.m.
