Governor Kathy Hochul revealed on Friday that New York state has secured $13.5 million in federal support, provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service Urban and Community Forestry Program.
This funding is earmarked to bolster urban and community forestry, ensuring broader and more equitable public access to trees and green spaces.
Managed by the State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), the funds will initiate grant opportunities via New York’s Urban and Community Forestry Program.
Of the total, $10 million will be allocated for implementing community forest management plans, and $2.9 million will be directed towards ash tree management. This allocation is part of a larger $1.5 billion nationwide investment, with New York state benefiting from more than $73.5 million for 28 distinct forestry ventures.
