Advocacy group Common Cause NY is advising counties across the state against purchasing the ExpressVote XL touch screen voting machine, recently certified by the state Board of Elections.
The system allows voters to mark ballots electronically, a departure from traditional paper ballots.
While several counties, including New York City, Ulster, Onondaga, and Chautauqua, have already opted not to purchase the machines, Common Cause/NY has praised their decision, emphasizing the election security benefits of voter-marked paper ballots.
Cybersecurity experts have previously expressed concerns about touch-screen voting technology, prompting some states to revert to paper ballots.
Adding to the concerns, the ExpressVote XL operates on Windows 10, which faces potential security vulnerabilities with Microsoft planning to discontinue software updates for the system in two years. However, Jennifer Wilson from the New York State Board of Elections noted that the machine does allow voters to confirm their choices and ensure accurate vote recording.
